While reading, notice the places where details you expect to see remain unclear and contrast these against the clear details the authors choose to give. In the opening scenes of the exodus story, the authors give us the names of many characters, such as the sons of Israel and the Hebrew midwives, but Pharaoh’s name never comes up. In the biblical imagination, righteous midwives are emphasized and tyrannical kings are downplayed.
